Fly Fishing: The Confectioness

Outdooress Bonefishing in Andros

See that grin. Totally Andrews fault...

I blame Andrew Bennett of course.

Him and his Deneki Lodge in the Bahamas. Since the March FIBFEST, all I’ve had is bonefish on the brain.

Lesson learned: If you start your fin follower season off on an extremely high note, the rest of the year is bound to make you feel like an unaccomplished angler.

I spent the whole of the summer chucking line and chasing tail while driving several thousand miles looking for mystic waters that weren’t flooded or blown out. I was on the hunt for flowing waters that were gin clear.

Mostly I just saw a lot of un-fishable waters and beat up road signs.

Word of advice: If you take the time to visit the Campbell River on Vancouver Island...bring a boat. That sh*t isn't wade-able...

I’ll be honest here and admit, for awhile this summer I wasn’t feeling exactly fly fishilicious. As a rainbow chaser, I was having trouble locating the bigerrfish and more often then I’d like to admit, I was battling  windknots & tangled lines. I had a bad backcast and an empty net. It was one of those kinds of summers…

Frustrations made it difficult to put fly to water and my thoughts started drifting to new locations, like fishing the rockies or heading south for some Arizona wanderings.

The radical idea of switching pursuits surfaced from time to time, things like,  Fly-Carpin! I should try carp on the fly because Michael Gracie likes it and if Mikey likes it everyone will like it”…

Of course, other not so compleat thoughts would surface. The mind is a mysteries internal after all and nothing brings forth the good stuff faster then a slow day on the river.

For example:

Fish Not Present: Well this gives a whole new meaning to The Trout Underground

Questions: I wonder if there is an actual  fiberglass manifesto  that one could read.

Agreement: I hear you mike’s gone fishin’…again, me too.

Possibilities: If I could send my own dispatches from the middle river, it would be a form of S.O.S

Wonder:: Owl Jones is in Montana today. I wonder if he’s going to sing for all the guys around the campfire.

Career Choices: I could be a Fishing Poet:  There once was a fish named trout. He filled my mind with doubt…

Deals: I hereby swear, if I catch a fish in the next hour, I pledge to Eat More Brook Trout.

After thoughts: If only I could find a salvelinus fontinalis rising that is…

Thinking of....Trout? Confectioness Candy Canes?

I know, you don’t even have to say it…the above makes me one of those slightly functioning fishaholics with a good dose of fly fishing crazy.

Anyway, some good things have happened this year. For one, I finally replaced my leaky waders with new ones.

So I’ve been dry while frothing around in the water. A legit upgrade if I may so say myself.

And then late August finally came and I went back home to toss a few dream cast Idaho flies. They say home is where the heart is and I finally found my groove. There’s nothing like finding fish leisurely sipping emergers or seeing a river damsel fly floating by and the fish grabbing the fly patterns you’ve picked.

Fly Fishing for Trout

Troutrageous!

By the way: I think there should be a new mantra that replaces the old saying, Fish On!

I tested out the shouting of troutrageous!  a couple of times and let me tell you. It totally works on an excitement level.

I’ve got lots of fodder for the catching chronicles of my personal blogging here. I just need to work on my time management.

You have to admit, floggin’ water and participating in the lunker hunt takes the priority when one has a few spare moments. I guess I could also put a little blame on the OBN. You know, that other site I blog 5 times a week in ~

Outdooress Brown Trout

A good day on the river...

P.S. I forgive Andrew, of course

P.P.S. For the two poetic confectioners, this ball of cotton candy is dedicated to YOU.

Forward Casting: Bite Worthy Words 3

by Rebecca on April 2, 2010

in Outdooress News

It’s time again for me to cast off to the different reaches of the Internet River and show everyone a few honey holes that are guaranteed to produce a catch or two. A few of these are contests, so once again I’m just showing how gracious and generous I can be (as long as you don’t usurp my possible win) when it comes to showing people the path to outdoor rewards…….Go Forth, prosper, read, comment. Do that and the good Karma Mama will smile upon your next fishing trip. Promise ~

I’ve really come to enjoy and appreciate the writings of Matt who writes the blog Fishing Poet.  Not all of his entries are in poem form. He also writes thoughtful observations about Fatherhood, his home area and so on… But as one example that shouldn’t be missed I suggest taking a peek at this entry call DOWNSTREAM.

A Giveaway ~ Rob who writes the blog A Bad Backcast and Other Inane Musings recently got himself a fancy kayak that needs a name. He’s giving away a fly box and flies for the brilliant soul who comes up with a great name that keeps him safe from voodoo nautical lore. The type that implies an un-named boat will surely sink. I’ve been thinking about it and I think the best boat names have a feminine curve so I’m sure he’s considering the name “Outdooress” …right Rob? Go give him some ideas! (closes April 9th) (Outdooress) (Outdooress) (Outdooress) or (Rebecca) will do.

Derek is a guide on the Yakima River and recently wrote an article entitled “On being a Fly Fishing Guide” Now I have to admit, I’m a bit guide shy, so his blog entry eased a few fears of mine. It’s a great insight from his guiding perspective. I feel I should also mention Derek made an offer to those who previously read my Fly Fishing Addiction article. He said, ” I want you all to know that I offer treatment in a caring, supportive, river environment. Come continue your addiction on the beautiful Yakima River in WA. Half and Full-day programs.” I’m all over that sort of therapy!

A Giveaway ~Ben who writes the blog Ben G. Outdoors is also having a giveaway. Ben runs a great blog with a good solid mixture of the outdoors.  For this giveaway, all you need to do is check out Ben’s Blog, subscribe and maybe even visit the sponsors site for an extra entry. He’s introducing the Marauder Outdoors quick adjust sling and if anyone of you utilize slings you already know ‘quick’ anything is GOOD. If you win, don’t forget me in your acceptance speech! (closes April 11th)

And Lastly. Ron writes the blog Colorado Angler. He’s a fantastic writer with a hook of humor that sets you. With a barb. Go read his recent article called Angling Antithesis  and if you can watch the video that supposedly at the top, well, I’m jealous. Enjoy!

Forward Casting: Bite Worthy Words 2

by Rebecca on January 26, 2010

in Forward Casting

As I drift down the Internet River I frequently come across articles written in other blogs/websites that catch my eye, delight my reading senses or merit a second cast. My Mother always taught me to share in good things, so this is my way of being unselfish and sharing the great discoveries I come across. I hope others enjoy these as much as I have ~

Beginnings: Kentucky Jim’s: Fishing in the Gene Pool ~ A beautiful and well written piece on the history and art of fishing through the ages. In the present day world of grip and grins, it’s good to go back to our beginnings and remind ourselves of the many pleasures and gifts a life spent casting a line can offer.

New Fly Fishing Blog: A brand spanking new fly fishing blog, The Fly Fishing Monster, by Nerveracker. Now, I hope the advent of his new fly fishing blog doesn’t decrease the length of his comments around these parts. I’ve come to enjoy Daves stories and observations via the comment setting, it’s like reading a blog entry within a blog entry (which makes him a writer sort, we are never brief). It was only a matter of time before he settled into his own corner. He has wit, humor and a fresh outlook from the eyes of someone considered a ‘newbie’ to fly fishing. Give him a visit ~

Fly Fishing Directory: Have a lot of free time in your day? Is cabin fever getting the best of you? Than what you need is more online sites to visit! Take a peek at Deneki’s Ultimate Fly Fishing Directory. It’s like a smorgasbord of fish pellets for the person who can’t get enough. Have a fly fishing blog as well? Leave a comment and get yourself added. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the site because it’s guaranteed to make you want to quit your job, grab your fly rod and travel….asap.

The Hatchery Truck: I’ve just discovered this blog, but found myself reading quite a few entries (always a good sign!) When I stumbled across this entry I had to 1) Laugh 2) ponder what I would do in that situation & 3) agree at the very end, that sometimes, we all just want to catch a fish. Go check out Fat Guy Fly Fishing and the entry, When the Hatchery Man Cometh.  What would you do???

Seduction of Flies: I’ve heard the expression Fish Porn before, and maybe Fly Porn is already out there as well, but if I could pick one website that represents what I would consider ‘Fly Porn’ it would be SwittersB & Fly Fishing. Several times per day new entries are put up that usually depict a fly in various states of dressing. It’s the flashings, and beads, and hackle and feathers and hooks…oh my…The big bold centerfold Fly pictures are enough to get my heart beating faster and I can’t help but think if fish could peruse a website they would be addicted to SwittersB…(Like I am)

As I continue to discover fantastic websites across the Internet Landscape I realize listing them all on the side of my blog will eventually create a skyscraper sized column. This is my version of organized accumulation. You should see how well I pack for a fishing or hunting trip! It’s my only domestic quality~ packing and organizing.

If you happen to come across this entry and would like to see your blog or website listed (if I haven’t discovered it yet), just leave a comment and I’ll put your site on the list. Let me know which category you’d prefer and send me two trout flies in the mail,……Ok, you don’t have to send me trout flies (unless you want to), but you could tell me the exact coordinates of one super secret honey hole location (because everyone should share) Ok, I’m kidding…(Fine, only half kidding)

This page will forever more be a collection in progress……..
